Abstract : ABSTRACT The fruit of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) has a unique nutritional value that makes the consumption of dates high among people in Arabic countries. The date palm has been extensively investigated with regard to its nutritional values. Many studies have demonstrated that the date has a high content of sugar, protein, fibre and other components such as polyphenolas, antioxidant and estrogens. As it has been described in the first half of this study that most of these components have psychoactive properties, it was postulated that the date fruit may have an enhancement effect on mood and cognitive performance. However, there are no studies that have examined the effects of dates on the cognitive performance and mood. This research examines whether the single dose (250ml of the date fruit) would affect mood and cognitive performance by testing 15 participants. Findings show that dates can significantly modulate many facets of mood in healthy young adults. In this trial, participants were more alert, calmer and more content after taking date fruit juice. The main enhancement in the cognitive tasks was noticed in the reaction time (msecs) on numerous memory tasks. However, more research is needed to identify the specific psychostimulant or psychostimulants that are involved. In addition, positive observations after the administration of the date fruit may provide a clearer understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
