Abstract
:
"Feminization of Poverty" is a phenomenon that poses challenge for the development strategies in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Reports indicate that women living under poverty line in KSA reaches a percentage of 21.1%, while this percentage does not exceed 2.5% among male. Therefor this research aimed at analyzing "Feminization of Poverty" in terms of its cause and effect. It employed the descriptive survey method to describe and analyze the phenomenon and to review the related literature, depending on the questionnaire as a tool for data collection. The results showed that organizational causes are the most influential on women poverty, followed by economic and social causes. Lack of sufficient support to start own-business regarded to be the most prominent organization cause for women poverty. High cost of living considered as the main economic cause. Traditional and cultural norms related to gender inequality were the most influential social cause of women’s poverty. Regarding feminization of poverty’s effects, it was evident that low standard of living and unemployment due to low skills and abilities are deemed to be the most important economic impacts. Psychological stress, and family’s conflicts and disputes that women is facing because of her poverty, were considered as the main social effects. The results found a positive relationship between feminization of poverty’s causes and its effects. Economic causes were founded to be the most influential factors on the social and economic aspects. Eventually, the Researcher recommended reviewing the social security’s stipulations and procedures, and to ensure the good guidance of funding enterprise’s startups. Furthermore, it is important to empower women economically, through the alignment of education outputs with labor market requirements. Additionally, there is a need to rise society awareness regarding the vital role of woman in development, by changing cultural and traditional practices that discriminate against woman.
