Abstract
:
Electrical power consumption is dramatically increasing all over the world. In Saudi Arabia, domestic sector is responsible for the highest percentage of electrical power demand with a figure of 48.1% of the total electricity consumption. This percentage is in annual linear increase due to the change of lifestyle for individuals and their trends towards welfare, as well as the increase in number of customers from the residential sector due to the population growth. However, as an attempt to rationalize energy consumption and encourage reliance on alternative energy sources, the Saudi Electricity Authority has introduced new regulations aiming to promote the connection of small-scale solar PV systems, owned by regular customers, to the distribution system. In this sense, the techno-economic feasibility of investing in solar energy is important to establish a base knowledge regarding the viability of residential grid-connected photovoltaics (GCPV) systems utilization. Hence, this thesis focuses on the techno-economic analysis of a grid-connected PV system to measure the technical options and financial viability of installation and utilization of grid-connected PV systems in Jeddah. The study analyzes the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of the system during the project lifetime and compares the LCOE to the utility tariff, and also investigate the significant technical and economic indicators set by International Energy Agency (IEA). Technical characteristics of the PV array, the amount of electricity production, investment and operating costs payback periods were also determined for the solar PV system. System Advisor Model (SAM) software has been used to build the financial model and assess the technical performance to facilitate decision making regarding solar PV system implementation. Climatic data that has been used in this study is retrieved from the European Commission Joint Research Centre database website. Sensitivity analysis that investigates the impact of varying techno-economic parameters on the system performance and feasibility has been discussed. Moreover, a systematic approach for current harmonic mitigation has been proposed in this study. PI-controlled shunt active power filter (SAPF) based on instantaneous reactive power theory has been designed for that purpose. The overall results show that Jeddah city possess a relatively good potential of solar PV system utilization to be a competitive and promising alternative energy source to replace fossil fuel-based electrical power generation. Results pertaining to current harmonic mitigation have revealed the ability of the proposed SAPF to maintain harmonics within IEEE standards.
