Abstract
:
Vernacular architecture is the outcome of hundreds of years of optimization to provide comfortable shelters and adapt with local climate conditions using available resources and construction techniques. Traditional buildings usually use passive cooling measures to provide thermal comfort without mechanical systems. In least developed countries like Yemen, severe power deficiency and consequent blackouts limit utilization of cooling units to provide thermal comfort. In Hadramout province east of Yemen, climate responsive adobe dwellings are fading-out gradually and being replaced with modern houses that neglect local climate and depend entirely on mechanical ventilation to provide comfort specially in summer. This thesis compares thermal performance and energy efficiency of adobe, concrete and stone local dwellings in Wadi Hadramout, taking the city of Seiyun as a case study. In addition, this thesis investigates the potential influence of passive design strategies on enhancing indoor thermal comfort and reducing energy demand for cooling in aforementioned house types. Research methodology of this thesis includes climatic analysis, on-site measurements, simulation and parametric analysis. On-site measurements were conducted to assess and compare thermal sensation inside the selected house types and to calibrate simulation models. Using simulation, Parametric analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of building materials and selected passive design strategies on thermal comfort and energy required for cooling in the three house types. The results indicated that internal operative temperature was 1.87 °C and 1.86 °C less in the adobe house compared to concrete and stone houses respectively. Furthermore, indoor operative temperature in the adobe house was the steadiest throughout the day. In terms of cooling loads, the results showed that adobe house saves 51.77% and 51.29% of the energy required for cooling compared to concrete and stone houses respectively when refrigerated cooling is used, and more than 65% In case of the evaporative Cooling. Moreover, the results indicated that using combinations of selected passive design strategies could have a remarkable impact on improving thermal performance and energy efficiency of the tested house types.
